INTRODUCING A NEW CAGE TO A HAMSTER- PLEASE HELP

Cayleigh Aug 03, 2003 10:05 AM

Hi

I just bought a new cage for my female (syrian) hamster that i have had for about a year now. The cage is a rotastack cage and is very different from the cage she has now but a lot more interesting for her. I put her into it and she seemed to like it, she went through all the tubes and everything but this was in the daytime (as she woke up anyway and is usually quite active in the day). She was playing and exploring her new cage for about 4 hours and i was getting a bit worried because even though she is quite an active hamster during the day time anyway she isn't usueally up for 4 hours straight! i put some of her bedding from her old cage into the new cage as i thought it might make her feel more at home but it didn't seem to work! she also got a little panicked after a while. I have put her into her old cage again because i thought she would be able to go to sleep in there easier and she went almost straight to sleep. I am going to try and put her in the new cage again tonight but i am worried that when i go to bed she will begin to panic again and i won't know! i really need her to live in this new cage though as the old cage is quite old now and isn't all that stable anymore (her old cage was a wire cage and this one is made up of plastic and wire). I would be grateful for any suggestions anyone might have about introducing her to her new cage

thanks in advance

dunno if u managed to get her into the ne wcage yet but if u havent.... hiding her fav foods around the cage to give her summink to make her feel at home when she is rushing about, putting her in it for half hour everyday, if shes fine nex ttime make it 45 min, an hour, whatever, and if all else fails, stick her in a run around ball or lease and totally tire her out, then put her in new cage, and watch her to see if she settles ok.
