the pet store we go to for our animal supplies had this cute white hamster with red eyes.....I said to the guy oh its an albino.........he said that it wasnt a "true albino", do these characteristics not suggest albinism? what else would you call it?

im confused...thanks.
b.t.w. his vision appears to be normal....judging by interaction with him....I just love hammies, we have a wonderful golden by the name of daisy hamtaro....so cute!

Ignore the pet shops guy, most times they don't know what they're talking about. A totally white hamster with red eyes is an albino.

there is no such thing as a true albino syrian hamster! The technical definition of an albino is a specific and single mutation on a specific gene locus (spot on the DNA chromosome) that causes no pigmentation on the skin,. eyes, and hair. The hamster was probably an overpatterned cream or cinnamon hamster. When banded, spotted, roan, or dappled genes mix they cover all the color creating a white hamster. Another gene that could be responsible for making the hamster a red eyes white is acromelanic white. This is almost an albino but not on the right gene. Hope this makes sense
