HELP! Sick Hamster

frankrentef Oct 15, 2003 12:28 PM

Help! Something is wrong with my hamster and not even our neighborhood vet knows what it is. For the last three - four weeks out female hamster (had 1 litter) becomes wet from nose to tail (vet ruled out wettail). The odor is awful. She'll stay dry for a few days then wet again.

She is in a glass cage (the one she's been in for 6 months, eating standard hamster food (same as last 6 months).

Any ideas?

Is her water bottle leaking? If she likes to sleep under her bottle and it has a slow drip, that may be making her wet.

Any idea as to what the "liquid" is that is all over her??
Could it be urine??? Maybe her bladder was affected after giving birth, perhaps it is incontinence or worst case, pyometra (mispelled perhaps) which is an infection of the uterus. I would think that the vet would have recognized this if it were the case. If it continues I would seek a second opinion.
