How can I will mate an aggressive female dwarf hamster?

azulaimar Jan 27, 2004 10:36 AM

Good morning!
I bought a female dwarf hamster. It is very aggressive towards others (specially males). How can I will mate it?
It could be possible any time in the future?
Thank you very much!

Hi,

Sounds like you have a little monster on your hands, :0)
In reading about breeding on Breeding Drawfs site, seems your pair must grow up together. Have these 2 been together since they were little?

Here is a small portion I copied for you, then I will give you the site address when done.

Dwarf hamster can live in groups, but if your dwarf hamster is grown up he/she will not accept a friend. Also two species of dwarf hamster do not mix and will just fight. ** Even so some dwarf hamsters develop antisocial behaviour and require separation

If shes really that NASTY, with others , you may want to start with a young couple who HAVE lived together. Otherwise you can just continue to try in your presence only, to see if she will accept him after awhile.

Just an idea, have you allowed them both to walk around together outside of the cage? Maybe she will be more accepting if they have brief, outside encounters first ! Just a thought

Heres the site I was telling you about,

lots of info, sure hope it all works out. Let me know what happens, I'm always around.
like a love/hate SAGA, hehehhehe,

Good morning PHEve!

Thank you for answering me promptly. I bought this female dwarf hamster her name is Ojones. It is like 6 months old. Ojones is very gracious, and very kind to humans, but aggressive towards males. She has bitten one of the males in the ear. The males are very young 2 months old.
She is been sort of kind with another female (Her name is Albina) dwarf but a few days ago it mildly bite her. Ojones is very pretty in color that´s why I want to breed her. I don’t think she is carrying any diseases but I will try to mate her when she is in heat with one of the males. I will keep an eye on it. Hope everything goes well. Thank you again.

wait until shes inheat, then she may be more willing and less apt to bite him.

Hey some girls just don't like males ,hehhehehe ! I think other than when shes inheat, I would house her alone.

If shes sweet with you, then shes a great pet, And since shes so pretty, that you would like to breed her, just leave her with male briefly to mate and then take her out.

Since you have 2 very young males, why not purchase another very young nicely colored, female and let her get used to living together with a male now. Thats worth a shot also.

I hope it all works out. Sometimes the ones we pair off and think WOW, these are going to make beautiful babies, it just don't happen the way we plan.

I know from breeding lizards, it usually winds up with very different partners than what I had originally thought. I guess
they pick and choose just like people, *SMILE*

Hang in there and keep trying , I'm sure you will end up with some beauties, just hope the future baby females DON'T take after there Mom, and turn on all the boys, hehehheheh !

Take care, and keep me posted, I'm here everyday, I'd like to know how it will all turn out.

Hey take some pics if you get the chance. Like to see this gorgeous little male biting VIPER !

Good morning PHEve. Yes, I have to see for a brief period of time if Ojones is willing to receive a male when she is in heat, otherwise I will follow the suggestion to better no breed Ojones. I have other hamsters that I can breed. I will take some pictures and will send those to you.
Thank you.

Does split caging work with dwarf hamsters? It's the most common way to introduce gerbils. You put them in a cage divided by wire or something they can see and smell thru but not hurt each other. So they live side by side but unable to fight. Switch the side the gerbil is on everyday so they get used to each others scent. After a few weeks or even a few days they start to nest near each other and can live together. My sister has dwarf hamsters and was thinking of getting a more colorful male to breed to her blue/grey female. I don't know hamster colors. I was wondering if they could be introduced this way.

great, although I really don't know if anyone uses it,or has ever tried it with drawfs.

I myself don't raise hamsters, not for many years. But it sounds like a pretty standard method, for any small rodent.

Worth a shot thats for sure, and good idea !
Maybe she will come back soon and read this, its very interesting and nice of you to post it !.

So are you a gerbil breeder? I had them as a teenager, now there seems to be different colors, alot more black ones out there,

There are over a dozen gerbil colors. I believe the first color aside from the standard agouti was black and it showed up around 40 yrs ago but I'm not for sure. Since then 6-8 color genes including the newest dilution gene in the past few years and a spotting gene have been bred for. I breed pied and mottled gerbils which have white on the head (spotting) a collar of white around the neck (pied) and white spots across the back (sometimes called mottled). Usually half a litter of spotted pups is good. Right now my best breeding pair produces around 6 different colors and at least 3/4 of the pups have white. I'm waiting to get a black or lilac(medium grey) with white.

You sound as though you've got your hands full hehehehe !

Ya know I dont think I have seen all the nice colors you seem to be producing. If you get a chance and have a camera, can you post some pics of your babies?

I would enjoy seeing some of your gerbils I had some as a kid, now I have a squirrel, and a bunny, dogs, cats, fish and I breed lizards ! *SMILE*

But I like all the little furries !!! Always tempting, there so cute !

Good afternoon aqh88! It is very interesting. I wanted to mate Ojones because it is very pretty in color but I choose not to breed her. Anyway, thank you for the suggestion. I have other two pair, male and female which I want to breed them. They are nice in color. I called them Tigre and Tigresa. The other day Albina was in heat and I put and leave Tigre with it. I hope everything goes well!!
Thanks...
