3 white/albino (?) hamsters out of 7 born, is this normal?

2dazagft Feb 23, 2004 03:16 PM

Our golden hamster just had babies with what we thought was her daughter but turned out to be her son. Three of the seven are white. I thought they were albino, is this right or are they just white. They have the red eyes and the flesh colored ears.
Is this normal, to have three solid white out of seven born?
Thanks for the help.

I have only had one white baby hamster born, and Im not sure how many there were in the litter(it was along time ago), but this should be normal because if its not it wouldnt have happened right, and because they are white their shouldnt be any problems with their health, except for the in-breeding.

The whites in hamsters are not actaully albino but dark eared white. A true c locus albino mutation is not yet known in Syrians like it is in Rats nice and rabbits and most other mammales. What you are seing is a simple c(d) recessive that was present in both mother and son. with this being true an estimated 25% of the litter will be DEW. Sice you persentage is higher it is just by chance. The ears will turn dark around the 5th week.
What does concern me is that you have any two syrians in the same cage. Syrians are solitary here is a link to a artical that will explain some of the problems with this practice.
