My black bear hamster makes a sqeeking noise repeatedly for about 2 min., all in a row. He will just start sqeeking and sqeeking (Sp). He seems ok, and it has been going on for about 2 or 3 months now. Is he sick, or just squeeking? He doesn't have a reason to sqeek. Please answer.

Thanks in advance,
Casina Malinchak

It's hard to say. I don't think hamsters normally squeak unless they're communicating with other hamsters. If he's by himself then you can rule that out. Squeaking can also be a sign of pain or distress. He could be having respiratory problems or some other illness, so I'd call your regular vet and see what they think. I would be worried a little though because I had a male hamster when I was about ten years old that did this and he died that night. But I don't know what it could be since its been going on so long, but I would guess respiratory problems. Hope he's okay!

Thanks, I am going to talk to someone. I think he might just be doing it because he is maybe talking to some noise he heard in the house. I do have frogs, so maybe he is hearing them croak.

or maybe he is just talking to you. He might just want to come out and play. Otherwise he could be bored or upset over something.

Me and my parents have decided he is just talking to us. He will be walking all over the bed and just start sqeeking for no reason. Nobody will be near him.

Have no idea why he would be squeaking alot, I know they will squeak sometimes when theres a couple, a spat, or playing, I never knew one to just continue to squeak !

I hope he is okay, and it is nothing! Let us know how ya make out!

Again, yeah, he is perfectly A.O.K.. He is, as me and my parents decided, just talking to us.

Thanks again,

I didn't feel like starting another post . Is there any way I can tell the difference between a male hamster and a female hamster, or will I have to leave that up to the vet?

Thank,
Casina
