I work at a pet store and recently we have lost three hamsters in two days. The hamsters showed these symptoms: swollen shut eyes, lethargy, poop stuck to bum, and laying sprawled out in cage. Their tails were not wet. Unfortunately there is no small animal vet in the area so we could not get them immediate attention. The hamsters only lasted a few hours after discoving the illness. The illness hit quick and hard. What do you think this could be?

Sounds like Wet Tail. If not treated immedately the hamsters would die soon.
