Info about Wet Tail

kittyluvr Aug 23, 2004 08:10 PM

I had just gotten myself an 8 week old Teddy Bear and have a question.

When I was a child, I lost two hamsters (didn't have them at the same time) to wet tail. Since then, I always steered clear of hamsters, as I was afraid of getting attached to one....the little cuties.

Well.....I decided to go for it.

How common is wet tail and is there anything I can do to keep my hamster healthy? Are there special precautions I can take to prevent it?

I imagine that when I was a child I did not care for the hamster well......such as keeping the cage clean. I also probably lost my first hamster and may have just gotten another and put it right in the new cage.....which was actually a habitrail (long time ago they had those plastic cages that you can just keep adding on more and more).

Just wondering if wet tail is chronic....something I should be very careful about. I have something called Dry Tail to add to the water, should I see what may be a wetness of the tail (diarrhea) starting, yet I know I will freak if I see it.

Also......the little critter (Bubbles) sleeps all day. I guess that is common, but it is upsetting, as I never see him. By the time I go to bed, I am guessing he is waking up. This does worry me, as how will I ever get to tame him, or even see if he is unwell if I never see him active?

I am just kinda new to all of this, so any info (even beyond my questions) would be appreciated.

Thanks!
Rose
