I have 2 female siberian hamsters. Last I noticed that one of them has been sleeping way more than usual and it bugged me. I opened the cage and found it in a corner and attempted to wake it up. The problem was that her eyes would not open. She can't drink properly out of her water bottle or eat right due to her eyes not opening. Is it an infection? Or did the other hamster attack her? All she does is sleep in a corner and breathe very fast, PLEASE HELP!! email if you can ( bautistacm@mail2.vcu.edu)

THANKS

I wish we knew, but unfortunity over the internet it's hard to know whats wrong.
Anytime an animal is have laboured breathing it is a serious matter and requires a Vets visit, or atleast call and ask.

The eyes along with the heavy breathing sound as though it may be a few things, viral infection, A. fungus sometimes grows in their cage from wet bedding, spoiled foods, and can cause breathing problems.

Also keeping eyes closed can be an impacted cheek pouch/ pouches

There are many things it COULD be, I say get a Vet to look at him !

I sure hope he will be okay, Please update us !

Thats such a shame! I would certainly clean out the cage and wash all food dishes anything she came into contact with, since you have the other female in there.

Like you, I have no idea what it was, but it was serious enough that she died. It may be something the other one can also get.

They do catch colds / influenza viruses. And also like I say that fungus is life threatning also.

Just be cautious with your other girl. I hope she will be fine.

Please, update us, and hope ya feel a little happier soon.
