old hamsters at petsmart/petstore

swizzbear Sep 20, 2004 12:17 AM

do they sell old hamsters at petstores [specifically petsmart]? cuz i sorta just noticed this and it seems like my hamster is a bit old.. their seems to be a bit of hair loss on his head and on his sides, but i could be from fleas.. [ive seen him itching himself like the way dogs do when they have fleas] and he seems to be a little slow..my dad has also noticed this too..so my main question is do they sell old hamsters at petstores?

I think the bald spots are from what ever is making him itch, no doubt. I would have to wonder if it is MITE related.

They will cause your little fellow to scratch himself silly, and create bald spots, and irratated skin that can lead to infections.

The baldness and itching is a good indicator of them. They can come from pet stores (other hamsters) bedding materials.

I would call your vet and look into this before it gets worse.
Sometimes it could be like a dermititus (dry skin thing) ,

But the mites are a BIG possibility also. Ya dont want them to continue to spread if it is. Especially if you have other hamsters.

You may be able to see small dots that are actually moving on him.

I hope I'm wrong, let me know, I'll be around, keep us updated,
take care,
