weird intestinal disease?

tofu Oct 25, 2004 10:49 AM

hi everybody,
my sister's hamster (about 3-4 weeks old) just had to be put to sleep because of an intestinal problem.
i was not there, but from what she told me it looked like the intestines actually "came out". it is very sad and unfortunate.
i just got a hamster of my own about a week ago. she is very young, and i am trying to understand what happened to my sister's so i can make sure mine won't get it.
has anybody experienced something in that direction? or heard of it? i have been searching everywhere, but nothing is mentioned.

Thats such a shame, I'm very sorry about your sisters little hamster.

Yeah, it sounds as if he suffered from a rectal prolapse.

Heres the meaning :

A hamster may suffer from a rectal prolapse where the intestine is pushed through the anus to the outside of the body. If the intestine is not damaged a vet may be able to manipulate the intestine back inside the body. However, if the intestine is damaged this may not be possible.

Often it is diarrehea or constipation that is the cause of the excessive straining that has caused the rectal prolapse.

Apparently the Vet was not able to manipulate the intestine back, and sadly the little guy had to be relieved of his suffering!
