2 dwarf hamsters better than one?

Fleck Jan 29, 2005 06:05 PM

Hello
I know Syberian hamsters HATE each other and one per cage/tank is the way but have read that dwarfs do okay together.
My question is do dwarfs PREFER another one as company or best one per tank? I intend to get one for a 20 gallon long tank with a wheel, etc.
I already have the tank so thought two dwarfs might enjoy each others co but if this isnt the rule and one will do fine I will just get one and he will enjoy the room in the tank and thats nice for him. I dont want a lonely hamster but dont want fighting to break out one night either.
Thanks.

Hello there

I can only tell you of my experience but I personally would not get more than one hamster per cage if I were to buy more dwarf hamsters. When I bought my roborovskis last year the 4 brothers were in a cage together at the pet store and they told me that they would not sell them individually, and that robos love spending time in large groups and live happily together. What a mistake! One by one the little things had to be separated... resulting in 3 large cages. Two remained living together for over a year and then one night fell out and had a fight which resulted in one dying. The trauma of having to find a little friend with bites and in distress plus the reshousing cost and time is not worth trying to guess if two hamsters will live together. I have learnt the hard way....
The hamsters all seem exceedingly happy living alone, and are actually more receptive to human contact when they are alone - I can pick up 2 out of the three and hold them (which is not in the robo's nature).

Good luck whatever you decide! I am sure they will give you a lot of fun!

Thanks for the info. After reading this post I decided not to risk it. My concern would be that one hamster would be lonely.
The keeping of two dwarfs together seems to be in the gray area and I have the feeling that maybe like their bigger cousins they prefer to be a lone.
I bought the book about Dwarf hamsters as pets but even the book was iffy about keeping two together and didnt commit to any answer.
I decided to get one.
Thanks.
