Looks like I'm branching out with a new type of fuzzy critter. I've gotten bit by the dwarf russian bug. I am trading my full sized tri colored hamster to a friend of mine who wants to breed her (I don't want to get into breeding full sized hamsters but feel with her unique coloration it would be a shame not to breed her).
In return I'm getting some baby dwarf russians that my friend breeds. We found some new breeding stock of russians at a local store today. Solid blues, black and white speckled, and blue and white speckled. We didn't buy them, but are going back next saturday in hopes they are still there. Anyways, they had a mom with babies and the babies were the cutest darn things I've ever seen in the whole world. One thing led to another and now I've been talked into breeding them myself. She promised to help "home" the babies. I'm not anticipating making any big bucks on this, just the joy of seeing those itty bitty babies and having first dibs on which to keep for myself. I'm really excited about this. Next Saturday seems a lifetime away. I sure hope the speckled ones will still be there. I plan to keep two separate enclosures, one for boys and one for girls. Breeding would be limited and controlled.
My question is, does anyone here breed and ship (or know of anyone who does breed/ship) russians? We'd be interested in some of the harder to find colorations if you can get them shipped. Or are there any known breeders 4 hours or less from the Buffalo NY area? I can see these are going to be extremely addicting.
I'll post pics if I can when I get my first group. I lost my camera and am pretty freaked out about it. I hope I didn't accidentally throw it away while cleaning. I'm lost w/out a digi camera. I sure would love to see photos of dwarf hamsters (any variety) if anyone here has them and could post them!!!!!
Any tips or suggestions (fav toys, fav foods, fav websites) would be greatly appreciated too!
Oh, I am very proud of myself. I fell in love with a female rat today (probably pregnant, was in with an amazing looking male) and I managed to drag myself out w/out purchasing her. Course, we are going back next week for the little hamsters... My friends are buying some baby dumbos that were too young to be sold last week. I will need some strong resolve next week to come home with ONLY dwarf hamsters!!!
