Breeding Sugargliders

drewman Aug 05, 2004 04:34 PM

Hi,
I have a breeding pair of sugargliders now. They've bred once, had a litter and the babies (twins) died so I never had the chance to sell one. I think it was because it was a first time mother. Anyways, my question to you guys is this, do you think it would be all that much more trouble to have a second pair of
sugargliders as opposed to one pair? Thanks.

Drew,
I think before you get another pair you need to figure out for certain what went wrong with the babies dying.
What are you feeding the gliders you have now? Nutrition or lack of is the main killer of gliders. Especially babies. And how old were the babies when they died? Were they out of the pouch yet? If so, how long were they out for before they died? If you can tell me this it might help to know what exactly went wrong. First time mothers in the glider familly dont usually have fatalities due to inexperience. Gliders are awsome parents from the first time.
If you can answer the questions I'll try to help you figure out what went wrong, how to fix it so it doesnt happen again, and tell you how best to add more gliders to your familly.
Also, if you could tell me the size of the cage, the type of cage, and what type of accesories are inside the cage that would help too.
I've been breeding gliders for 7 years now. They are great.

I fed the parents of the babies the BML diet. The babies were about three days old OOP when they died. I dont remember exactly because it was a long time ago. The cage is 5'tall x 3'wide x 2'deep. The cage is homemade and it has black pvc coated wire, 1" x 1/2", slide out pan, and it has four shelves. It has rope, manzanita ladder, 2 wooden ladders, and some other small bird toys. E-mail me at drewman1990@comcast.net so we can finish the conversation in private.
