I'm still torn between rats and a glider. I want a pet that I can sit and hold...I guess kinda like a "lap dog" in a way. Are gliders overall too hyper to sit still to be pet and cuddled?

I think you have already decided on a rat if I'm not mistaken. But if you havent, I still say, it sounds like you need a rat. 
Gliders are not the sit on your lap pet. Sleep in your blouse or shirt pocket....deffinetly. But not like a rat who will curl up in your lap to sleep.
Yep, I decided on a rat. I think a rat's personality and nature fit what I want much better. I also don't think I would have the time to provide a sugar glider with all it needs and deserves. Thanks for your help!
