I was curious if holding a glider is similar to holding a hamster? Are they very wild, meaning constantly hopping around? Do they ever seem to stay in one spot and sit in your hand? They seem to move very fast. Also I hear one of the downfalls of having a glider is the fact that they go to the bathroom when they have to where ever they are. Do they usually make a large stool. They seem to be still very wild. Maybe they just need to be breed in captivity more so they calm down. Honestly would I just be better off with a domesticated animal like a hamster? Because I can read all of the information that I can but are they the type of animal that will stay interesting. I see so many people trying to sell them and give them away. thanx for your time
Holding a glider is not like holding a hamster. The tameness of your glider will be directly proportionate to the amount of time spent with the animal.
Gliders are wild animals. They have not been bred in captivity long enough for any real domestication to occur. Because they are a social animal living in familial groups they will bond to a person,if enough time and effort are applied.
Gliders are not for everyone. Their diet is very tricky and if they are not given the proper nutrients they will die. They are nocturnal and while they can be flexed in their schedule most gliders do not rise until well after sunset.
One of the first things a glider will do upon awakening is to empty their bladder and bowels. This cannot be stopped without traumatizing them.
You cannot discipline a glider because of their small brains. I took in a rescue once who was so messed up because she had been hit every time she pee'd on her owner. It took a year before she would pee on anyone. And trust me that was a good breakthrough.
Gliders are a lot of work but can be lots of fun.
I suggest going to www.sugarglider.net and read all the various articles before you commit to a glider.
