MICE DYING! PLEASE READ!

Champagne Dec 18, 2003 01:32 AM

ALL MY MICE ARE DYING OFF! One died... I thought it was natural death... I was tight on caging so I put a male in his cage... Soon after he too died. This time I gave him a sort of autopsy (Don't worry, I didn't cut him up). I found hundreds of little black 'wormish' things mostly around his head... The first word the comes to mind is MITE... But I'm not sure. What are the possibilities and how can I stop it... Please answer soon, it's already started on a third and fourth mouse!

VET!

Mites tend to look more like black spots than wormish things. I would deffinitely take the dead mouse to a vet and any living ones that were housed with it. I would also take extra care when handling your so far ok mice, including doing a throughout washing of hands and clothing (if they get off your hands) to avoid spreading these parasites, if that is what is killing your mice. Another thing is figure out what changed in the last week or two before the first mouse died. This will help isolate where hte infection came from.

A vet visit should be your priority since from the sound of things, this ailment is spreading fast and if not identified and treated immediately, could wipe out your entire collection.
