chattering mouse-HELP!!

katie8 Dec 30, 2003 04:50 PM

this is a long story. First, I got two female mice from my friend andwhen one, belle was 4 months old, she died. I don't know y. that was in september. Katie, the surviving mouse, was really, really depressed, like she wouldn't move, but she wasn't sick up until then. That day, I called my friend and got two other females that were her littermates and they get along great. the only thing is that ever since that happened, Katie has made a chattering noise, kind of like a shiver, but she hardly ever stops making it. You can sometimes hear it from the other room. I took her to the vet and he seems to think its mites, but the strange thing is both of the others are fine. The medicine he gave doesn't seem to be helping. I don't know what is wrong. She hardly moves, like she has no energy and before she used to be so active. Any advise is very welcome.

Sounds more like a respiratory infection. Take her to another vet that specializes in exotics. I don't think mites are much of a problem for mice but I could be wrong.

I forgot to mention that she was losing fur. thats kinda important. could it still be a respitory infection?

Mites are actually pretty common in mice. They often get them from their bedding. What kind of bedding do you use? And what kind of bedding did your friend that you got her from use? Does she scratch at herself when she is making the chattering noise? If not I really can't say why she is chattering. What kind of medication did your vet give you? At my clinic we usually treat once with dilute ivermectin and then repeat in 10-14 days for mites. You will also have to strip the cage after the first ivermectin treatment and clean with a 10% bleach solution. I rec. switching to Care Fresh if you are not already using it. Hope this helps.
