first time mouse owner

cichlid man Jan 04, 2004 02:20 PM

I have a couple of questions about the 2 mice I bought the other day... (I have never owned mice before)

1) Can a spiny mouse and a "fancy" mouse breed and produce offspring?

2) How do I know if my mouse is pregnant? Andy other information about this subject would be helpful...

Well, I'm actually not sure if spiney mice and fancy mice can have offspring together. But to answer your other question, the only sure way to tell if a mouse is pregnant is that it will look a lot like a lightbulb about one week before giving birth. What I maen is her belly will swell a very noticable amount. Hope I was helpful!!

I don't think spiny mice can breed with fancy mice at all. Fancy mice can't even breed with regular deer mice which are their wild cousins. Also, don't house spiny mice with fancy mice either. They can carry parasites or micro-organisms that are not harmful to themselves but could be deadly to the other species.

You can tell mice are pregnant easier when they are 14 days pregnant as they start getting that lightbulb like shape as mentioned already. If you have the mouse for more than 21 days then it isn't pregnant at all. Mouse gestation is about 21 days on average.
