Litter of 12

cichlid man Mar 04, 2004 09:03 PM

I came home today to find 12 little pinkies squirming around in a nest. The mother is very caring and protective of her babies. I let her crawl into her sister's cage while I counted her babies. I was very careful and I placed everything back the way it was. I hope she doesn't decide to snack on any of them. One question though.. how many nipples do female mice have. I only counted two and thats going to be hard trying to feed a dozen babies. That's why I'm worried about her eating some of them.

Mice have 8 nipples and I have never observed much trouble for large litters to all get enough milk. Female mice spend alot of time feeding their babies so all can get a chance to feed. I have litters as large as 14 or 15 and all the babies reached weaned age at the same time.
