Orphaned Wild Mice

mousekeeper Jul 26, 2004 12:19 AM

Four days ago a mouse nest was disturbed at my horse barn by someone terrified of mice so unfortunately the mice were scattered outside. There were three total that were found although more might have been left undisturbed. I found out shortly after of what had happened and gathered up the baby mice. One unfortunately had already been found by the fire ants but was still alive and kicking. I am not sure of their age and have never cared for mice before.

We have had them for going on 5 days now and have so far been feeding them cow's milk. I read on several sites that kitten milk is best and we did by some from a local pet store, but they seem to be doing so well with the cow's milk is it alright to keep them on it? Again I have no experience with mice at all and especially not raising orphaned ones.

The one who had been covered with ants would not eat and died several days ago, but the others are crawling and burrowing in the cut up t-shirt in their box. Their body temperature seems to be good and they are definitely most active when hot.

I have been feeding them out of an eyedropper and it has been working very well. They open their mouths wide to accept the milk and are pooping regularly and without needing it to be induced with warm water.

How old might they be? They have a thin coating of hair that developed recently. Their ears are becoming more defined. They are an inch long not including tail. Their eyes are not open but eyelids are developing.

I would love any information that might be helpful.

Thanks,
Becca in Texas

The fact they are developing fur tells me they are about a week old or slightly less. You must have found them as pinkies to have them for 5 days and only be starting to grow fur. It's remarkable that you were able to keep them alive so far. Most times orphaned mice at that young age don't survive.
