Anyone have Spiny Mice?

hjk Sep 26, 2004 09:07 PM

Hi. I have two spiny mice. stumbled upon them in a petstore i was checking out. I had never heard of them before that. They were so cute I couldnt help but get some. They were selling them for $3.99 each, so I couldnt refuse. I think I have a male and female, but have yet to see babies or breeding. So who knows, maybe I'm wrong. I was just wondering if anyone else has some and what all they can tell me about them. I am looking for ideas on bedding, toys/chew things, food, treats, taming, etc. Thanks.

I have a male spiny mouse. They are wonderful pets! I feed mine regular mouse food. Some treats you could feed them are apple slices, carrot bits, crickets, mealworms, and hay. Mine loves to chase the crickets, and it is so funny to watch. In the wild they are insectivores so insects are a very important part of their diet. They don't drink much water but you should have it available at all times. They also like to chew (as all rodents do) so provide a chew toy of some sort (untreated wood works nicely). Enjoy your new little pets, they are great personalities.

Here is what I use for my set-up. I have a 5 gallon tank with a screened lid. I use aspen shavings as a bedding (don't use pine or cedar!). I have a water bottle, food dish, wood chew toys, a wooden "house" and a treat dish. I feed regular mouse food. Taming is quite simple. Just beware of touching their face area! I accidentally poked mine in the eye and he bit me. And don't pick it up by the tail because it could break. THey really do make nice pets overall.
