cage question

laciegsd Oct 19, 2004 07:19 PM

Ok I have a question that I hope someone can help me with. I have a cage that was used for a hampster. The bars run longways and are half an inch apart. I am wanting to know if a mouse can get out of this.

My daughters just lost their pet hampter to cancer and are now wanting mice. I did 10 years ago do a breeding project for FFA on mice put I had to keep them in laboratory cages so I don't know if this hampster cage I have will hold the mouse (or mice, lol).

It will need to hold the mice b/c I have cats and ferrets and dogs that would love for the mice to escape, thus before I get them I want to make sure they will "stay" in the cage.

Any thoughts on this would help.

Erin

mice can get out of openings that are 1/2" wide. Pretty much any opening you can stick your baby finger through, mice can get through. I had a full grown male mouse squeeze through bars that were only little over 1/4" apart. Hilarious to watch him wiggle back into the cage when I found him sitting on top of it one morning, but deffinitely enough to make me switch to rounded cornered rubbermaid containers with aluminum screening over the top. You could also use 1/4" hardware clothe to cover the top of the cage instead of screen. Just cut sections out of the lid and cover with the hardware cloth using either duct tape or bolts with wide washers.

Large plastic critter keepers are great for a group of mice as well.

I was afraid it wouldn't hold a mouse. Well thank you for letting me know. I guess now its off to the store to see about a mouse cage...and some mice.

Thanks,
Erin
