found a mouse, Help!!

dandez8 Nov 03, 2004 03:23 PM

My girlfriend found a mouse in her classroom and we're wondering if it's a good idea or safe to keep as a pet. Should we have it checked by a vet? Releasing is an option but now that it's getting very cold here in CO, looking at other options. Any thoughts, information, websites, forums, etc that you can give would be appreciated. Thanks!

I suggest releasing it. Wild mice can carry a virus (hinto virus i think it's called) that is harmful to humans, not to mention having fleas and other parasites. Also, wild mice don't tame very well compared to domesticated fancy mice.

They usually carry leptospirosis or Weil's disease, I don't think that's the same thing. But it can be nasty, and it is spread via their urine - and mice are pretty much incontinent. I'd release it ASAP - and in the same area you found it if you can.

and wild mice can carry it....but more importantly this mouse probably won't deal well with captivity as it is likely to be very stressed--hopefully you've let it go already, they are smart little things that know how to survive...it will quickly find a warm safe place.
