Another baby question

reinakim Dec 02, 2004 08:30 PM

Thanks for the help last time! I cleaned the cage and mommy and babies took it well. We discovered she has ten little ones! We plan to maybe keep 2 of the female babies. The others are going to the pet store, I spoke to the pet store and they will not sell them as feeders. So, that will leave us with a total of 4 mice. I bought a bigger cage for them, so my question is when is a good time to move them to the new cage? I don't want to stress them out with a move after the babies just arrived a few days ago.

I suggest leaving them all in the same cage till the babies are weaned, then you can separate the ones you are selling, and move the ones you are keeping into the larger cage. Mice wean at 4-5 weeks of age. Then it is much easier to distinquish the males and you can ensure you have females (though when at the fuzzy stage, you can more easily see the nipples on the females).

Oh, yeah we are gonna wait to seperate them until the babies are old enough. I just want to know when it's okay to move everyone into the new cage. We wanted to move them all in before they are old enough to go to the pet store. Just so when they get bigger and start running around.

There shouldn't be any trouble moving them all over once you are ready. Baby mice start running around as soon as their eyes open, at about 2 to 2 1/2 weeks.
