Penelope the cuuuutest... will she be OK all alone?

ElusiveKimmaby Jul 28, 2005 09:41 PM

Hi guys! I know this is like blasphemy speaking of this on this forum but I had this feeder mouse I was going to feed to my snake, but my snake was being all weird and wouldn't let me take her out of the tank. So, rather than pulling her spine apart, I let her stay in and set up the little feeder tank (aka the attacked mole/vole/mouse rescue-from-the-cats tank) for the mouse to stay in. I washed it out, put the bedding in, and finally got the mouse of the box. Lo and behold, first of all, she's too big for my snake. Secondly, she's the SWEETEST little mouse I have EVER met!!! I'm in love! I've had 80 mice at once before (but who on this forum hasn't? ) and none were this tame. I don't get it. She's just a little feeder mouse, kept in a little feeder tank, handled no more than once daily for the sake of moving her from the day before's dirty tank to another nice clean tank (I used to work at the pet store I bought her from). She's great! She acts almost as good as my rats used to. She stays on my lap when I let her out, she likes shoulder riding (but she's so tiny I worry about that sicne I can barely feel her weight) and she actually comes to my hand to be picked up. Oh, I love it!
Now the big question... since I'm keeping her, will she be OK all by herself? I hesitate to get a second, since I started out with 4 once and ended up with 80... I'd rather just have her by herself if I can, but since I always had at least 2 together I don't know how mice fare solo.
Thanks!
OH! P.S. Her name is Penelope

Mice are very social and do need companionship from others of their kind. It would be best to buy another female mouse to keep with her.

OK here's the other question... if I were to get another mouse that's more like a typical mouse, you know, jumpy, all that, would it teach her to act like it and make her forget how good she was? I don't want her to lose these fantastic traits, she's such a wonderful little mouse!

The new mouse won't teach your current mouse to be unfriendly. In fact, if you interact with both mice, the new one will start becoming friendly as well.
