should my mouse live alone after its cage mate passed?

toemosdapfunk Sep 04, 2005 11:00 AM

I have had two female mice for exactly a year this september. One of them passed away suddenly last month, and now I just have the one female. I know that mice are very social animals and I have read that if the are kept alone they can become depressed and just seem rather lazy and reclusive when alone. However my lone remaining mouse seems as active as it always was when its friend was still alive. Im guessing that maybe it senses that the other mouse has passed and knows that there aren't any other mice in the established hierarchy, so the other mouse's death isnt effecting it much. Should I get another mouse to keep it company? or can my last remaining female live the rest of her life alone? (shes a year old).
Thanks
Tom

did you find out what the other mouse died of? If it's a communicable disease, it's possible your remaining mouse may have it. I would not get another mouse till you are sure your current one is perfectly heathy, then buy a new mouse or two and after you are sure they are heathy (either keep them separated till you can take it to a vet or if the place you bought them has them regularly vet checked).

Mice are social and do need a friend.
