THE SUN (London, UK) 31 October 05 Mice sing to get some sex
Male mice sing to woo their prospective mates, scientists have discovered.
The creatures serenade girlfriends with chirping-like noises, similar to birds.
Study leader Professor Timothy Holy recorded the noises using ultrasound technology at Washington University in the US.
He identified distinct categories of sound, with different melodic themes like in a catchy tune.
Prof Holy said: “The richness and diversity of mouse song appears to approach that of many songbirds. It’s not yet clear whether singing conveys an advantage to male mice during courtship.”
