Pregnant mouse & newly introduced mice

thenara Mar 01, 2006 10:42 AM

We recently bought two female mice and very shortly afterwards bought two more. There were some minor squabbles, so we decided to introduce the newer mice by using a divided cage with a wire separator where we rotate the two sets of mice between sides a few times a day.

The problem is this: we realized that one of the earlier-bought mice is pregnant (a pet store problem!) and is not adjusting to the newer mice because of it--she's a big grump (whereas the other earlier-bought mouse is fine with the two newer ones). What should we do?

Right now, the two groups are still separated by the wire divider, and we would like to completely mix them soon--but Truffle is still attacking the newer ones every chance she gets!? What are our options here? Thanks.

you will have to keep the pregnant female separated till after she weans the babies. if she is already being aggressive towards the other mice, no other choice really. if she gets along fine with the mouse you bought with her, then keep her with that one, so she won't get lonely. also double check to make sure none of the mice are actually male. many petstores are not good at sexing animals, or just don't bother learning how.

once all the babies are weaned and new homes found for them, then you can reintroduce the mother back with the other mice.
