I have a pair of 2-3 month old spiny mice. I've read up on them and have attempted to provide a thorough diet. Within in a few days, one of my spiny mice has a large bald spot on his back. There are no scabs, scratches, bites or blood on his body, nor do they do too much scratching. I picked up on a couple posts about this, but didn't seem too conclusive?
To be more specific this is the diet I have fed them thus far, alternating supplements:
Their base diet it forti-diet mouse block feed
Beneful meat & veg dog food (which, I am cutting out because of dyes, but should I switch to kitten food?)
crickets sparingly
plain cheerios
occasional vegetables like string beans, carrots. (I don't keep a lot of fresh veg in my home usually)
seed treats for mice (once a week)
The most compelling thing I read is if you feed them too much protein, hair loss might occur. I recently dropped several (6+) live crickets in because they enjoy hunting prior to this mysterious hair loss. I also read that red dyes are harmful and my dog food is.. yes, bright red. So, I'm planning to cut back on the extra proteins and provide loose seed and more vegetables.
Any help, suggestions, or links are much appreciated!
