thinking about getting mice

abbey_road3012 Jun 23, 2006 04:48 PM

Hi all. My husband and I are debating between mice and rats, and I've been looking at different kinds of mice. Does anyone know where I can find orange ones? My husband and I are moving to near St. Louis, and we'd be willing to drive probably 4 or 5 hours to pick up. Anyway, if anyone breeds or knows someone who breeds orange mice, please let me know. Thanks.

Orange mice? I never have seen an orange mouse, though some can be beige or tan. Most I have seen are not solid colored in tan or beige, other than a more tan looking agouti type color/coat.

The only yellowy/orange rat I have seen turned white once it was full grown and turned out to be a siamese point white/charcoal grey points.

Personality wise, rats are more easily handled than mice and more intelligent. Mice tend to be more skittish when handled but can be tamed down and will calmly walk and climb all over you. They do have the annoying habit of going to the bathroom all over you. So far I have not heard of anybody able to train a mouse not to do this. Rats however, can be easily trained not to eliminate on you. Most just do it naturally, once they get over their initial nervousness (even when nervous they tend to only poop). Male rats will 'dribble' urine as they walk but if you don't mind a few spots of urine on your clothes, then it's easily tolerated. Females don't do this dribble thing that I have noticed.

Well it would figure they're rare! My husband's favorite color is orange(he's downright obsessed), and I saw an orange mouse on the AFRMA site. I showed it to my husband and he just loved it! Oh well, we found a lady who has tricolor mice, so we might go with those to match our beagle. And for some reason my husband doesn't care that rats are better for kids, more tame, or have better potty habits. He says mice are cuter so he wants mice (and of course no matter which ones we get, he won't help with cleaning cages or feeding or handling!). He's such a dork.

orange mice are very common, heck, I have several now.

How about dwarf rats if you like the rat personality, but hubby likes the cute small size? I breed dwarf rats, but I am near Cleveland Ohio.
Here is my website:

You might try looking at ratster.com to find a breeder closer to you, but dwarf rats are VERY rare, I had mine shipped from california.

We ended up getting some rats, but might also get mice sometime in the future. I saw a little orange and white mouse the other day at PetCo, so I'm going to keep my eyes out for more. Now that we have the rats, we're already buying food and bedding and toys, so mice would cost virtually nothing more other than the actual mice and a house for the small cage we have. Hopefully my husband will get over this little "we have enough pets" thing.
