Orphaned babies

chocolatepocky Jun 26, 2006 01:42 AM

I work at a petstore and today somebody walked in, went into the pet food section and dropped off a box full of baby mice. I think their was two litters in their because 5 of the mice had fuzzy fur and the others were 5 pinkies. I told the store manger and he told me to throw them away because they were going to die.

Instead of throwing them away, I took them home with me. I bought some kitten milk replacer and got a syringe with the measurements of cc's from the vet office. I have been feeding them every two hours. They won't suck on the syringe and I have tried dipping some cotton string in teh milk and trying to get them to suck. But its not working. So in the end I had to pry their small mouths open and give tiny tiny drops of milk. Is that ok? I won't hurt them if I pry their mouths open, right? Any other ideas on how to get them to suck?

After feeding, I use a wet q-tip and slowly swipe their private parts to get them to go to the bathroom. However, no luck. I started feeding them at 2:30pm and have continued to feed them until now. They still aren't urinating What am I doing wrong?

Pinky and fuzzy mice are very hard to care for. THe best thing to do is give them to a nursing mouse or rat mom. If none are available it probably be better to humanely euthanize them.

I do know a site or two that may give you more ideals on what to do to nurse them. I have heard using a clean watercolour brush to drip milk works better than a syrenge etc. (watercolor brushes are the rounded brushes with a point usually with a very soft hair).
