I have Pygmy babies!!!!

CuteePatoote Jul 07, 2006 06:56 PM

I just heard teeny tiny baby Pygmy mice squeeks!!!
I can't wait to see them!!!

I thought I was smart and hot glued a box to the wall of the aquarium and had an opening on the back of the box. I covered the glass with a cover so they wouldn't know it was cut out. Don't you know they piled the bedding up the glass and I still can't see in the nest!! Smart mice.

I can't get a pic of them either. Darn things hide everytime I try.

I have 3 half grown pygmy babies! And the mother looks about to pop again! They are so darn cute! I can't stand it. I finally got to see them today. They are 2 weeks old and are half the size of the parents.

Congrats on the babies (so where are the pictures???). Keeping the male in with the mother and babies will mean she will always be pregnant as soon as she gives birth. Most if not all rodents are able to get pregnant within the 24 hours after giving birth if the male is in the same cage. These back to back pregnacies however, are very hard on the female and eventually do shorten her life span. Not to mention you will have lots of babies and as the babies themself mature, the females also risk being impregnanted by 'dad' or their brothers. I don't know for sure at what age baby pygmy mice are sexually mature. Normal fancy mice/domestic mice babies become sexually mature around 4-5 weeks of age. Sexes should be separated at 4 weeks to prevent unwanted pregnacies.

Yes she is probably pregnant again. She had a second set on the 20th. I will let her have this batch and will separate the males and females in a week or two. I am moving this week and will have another aquarium to use for the "separation". I wish I could get another male or female so that I could breed more. I can't figure out how I will know the males and the father apart when they are all full grown. Or for that matter the mother and daughters. Anyone know where I can find someone that breeds these adorable creatures?
And about the pics. Geeze they only come out at night and then only with low light. I haven't been able to take a pic yet! The pinkys are soooo darn cute! The size of a pencil eraser!
