Long Post, Please Help if Possible

Hi all. I got some new mice, this time from a breeder! They are just wonderful. Dorothy is a standard coat, self black female (they're all females, by the way), Glenda is agouti with a tiny white spot on her forehead, and Em is a self black rex. All are just beautiful, and very sweet. The two black girls are living with my neutered boy Vivaldi, and they seem to be getting along great. I was so mad earlier because I went in their room and the three of them were all in a pile sleeping. It was so cute, and by the time I got the camera and came back they had dispersed and were playing.
Glenda is living with my other girl Chaminade, who I believe I've posted a picture of somewhere. Ah well, I'll post her picture at the end of this one- she's awfully pretty. Anyway, the mouse formerly known as Rosa, who I will also post (Chaminade is the marked one, "Rosa", now Johann, is the fawn), has turned out to be a male, even though I bought "her" from the female tank at Petco. Petco is doing absolutely nothing to make up for their mistake except telling me pretty much to donate them to the store so they can sell them. Not an option. This store has nothing for the mice except a single wheel, which is shared by 20 or so mice. Anyway, "Rosa" lived with Chaminade for about two weeks before sprouting testicles. So I believe Chaminade is pregnant, which is why she is living just with Glenda instead of with Vivaldi and the other girls. I am worried sick about her because my guess is she's about 2 months old, about a month too young to be bred safely. Her tummy is getting pretty round, but since I don't know when she conceived during the 2 week time the two were together, I don't know when to expect the babies. I check on her all throughout the day, and I've been handling her a lot so she'll trust me. She hasn't been too keen on even having me in the room, but the past three days she's actually come out of her house to lick kitten milk off my finger, and tonight she got into my hand and let me hold her. She's doing much better now with being handled. Still a bit skittish, but I think she's beginning to trust me.
One of my males, Bartok, has some nasty wounds on his feet. He lives alone, and his cage is far enough from the other males' cages where I know they didn't bite him. One of the toes on one front paws is missing, and both front paws and one back paw have really bad-looking bumps on the top side. They're greenish and very swollen, especially the front right one. I know they hurt because he tries hard to not put weight on them. We're taking him to the vet on Friday, so hopefully we'll get him all patched up and back to his mean little self. Anyone have any idea what this might be? He has Carefresh Ultra bedding, the shelf in his cage is covered with a soft towel, and there's nothing I can find in his cage that could have injured him, much less three of his paws, especially on the top side. I check all the mice over every couple of days, and the last time I checked Bartok was Monday, and he was fine then. Thanks for any help with this. It's really freaking me out.

It isn't unusual for petstores to miss sex their animals. Also, many males when handled are nervous so their testicles are sucked into the body and thus not readily apparent to inexperienced people trying to sex mice.

Though your female is young and starting to show signs of pregnancy, she is most likely conceived within a few days of you getting her, or even possible she was pregnant when you bought her already. Mice only really start to show they are pregnant in the last week of their pregnancy (gestation 19-21 days). She should be fine though, even though she is younger than mice should be when bred. I also suggest cutting down handling her, as too much can stress her and may cause her problems. Too much handling can also damage the babies, if great care isn't taken. Definitely fine for you to talk to her and hand her tidbits through the cage etc, or if she willingly crawls onto your hand, you can take her out of the cage, just be extra careful she can't fall.

Sorry, forgot about the male with the foot problem. It sounds like it may be bumblefoot, which is an infection of the toes, usually caused by injuries to the foot due to wire cages. Not sure if you had the towel over the bottom of the cage right away or only when you noticed a problem with his feet. Be careful of the towel as well, as claws can get caught in the little loops in the towel itself and cause injuries to the toes or loss of nails.

A vet trip is the best thing to do. HE can check for bacterial infections, broken bones etc and prescribe appropriate treatments and medications.

Hi, and thanks for the post. I'm so freaked out over this. Chaminade is getting much more friendly, she'll eat kitten milk off my hand and will even crawl on so I can pick her up! I pick her up if she climbs onto my hand herself, but otherwise I just let her smell my hand or eat treats. She is getting a bit "showy" looking, so I check on her many times each day. If they're only supposed to show during the last little bit I'll be expecting babies any day now. It seems like she's getting bigger every day.
I took the mouse with the foot problems to the vet, and he has a very bad bacterial infection. I also have it on my back, and my daughter has it on her face. He has been on antibiotics since the night after his vet trip and all but one of the bumps have fallen off and look much better, and the remaining bump looks like it's about to fall off. He was even running on his wheel earlier, so I think he's feeling better. Poor guy! He goes in for a follow-up visit on Friday. My little $2 mouse cost nearly $100... ugh! Luckily he has had absolutely no contact with my probably-pregnant girl, or any of the other girls for that matter, and no direct contact with any of the other mice except the one we got on the same day. None of the boys who were in the room with him seem to be having problems. He is now in a separate room. Again, thanks, hopefully all will go well with the babies. I really hope she has a small litter!
