BLACK EYES, WHITE FUR............

APLAXAR Dec 21, 2006 11:52 AM

so i breed mice for my snakes and frogs, i know i know.... now i breed fancy ones because i like them better than the white albinos (i think they are kind of creepy). so i recently bred my male holsten, (cow print) to my female tan brindle, and i think that one baby came out white with black eyes, i havent seen a white with blacks eyes before, have any of you. they are going into their fuzzy stage so it could be a tan or something but i was just curious

Black eyed white mice have occured before though they are not common. basically they are just an extreme version of broken pattern (ie the spotted kind) where the 'spots' are just non existant or so small they are not easily seen (maybe a few stray hairs hidden in the white) or it could be some form of total lack of color.

I had tried breeding these several years ago, unfortunately just when I started getting offspring in two unrelated groups (was going to take a male and female with almost no body color other than white to see if their offspring will be completely white with black eyes) but had to sell my breeding groups and all the offspring I currently had as I was moving and didn't have anywhere to keep the mice between apartments. Moved out of town due to a new job and it started rather quickly, so didn't have time to look for a place before moving, stayed with friends who certainly didn't want a bunch of mice as well.

Mice are fun to breed to isolate traits but in my new place, I don't have the room to keep mice colonies. IN my old place, it was a town house so it was easy to put them all into one room, and thus didn't have my entire place smelling of male mice even if I cleaned the cages quite often. IN a one bedroom apartment, it is just impossible to keep mice to breed for fun.

Black eyed whites are some of my favorites. I don't have any white mice at all, though. With my next bunch of mice I definitely need a black-eyed white. Also another fawn satin like my boy Schubert, blue brindle, and of course lots of others! I bet your little ones are awfully pretty.

I don't think I could ever breed "for fun." I'd end up keeping all, or at least most of the babies because I'd trust so few people to take proper care of them. Plus my husband doesn't like the mice, especially the males. He'd never let me breed them unless we had a place where he didn't have to see them or smell them, and even then he'd just quietly dislike them. I don't know how anyone couldn't like mice. They're too cute not to like. And I've had entirely too much caffeine tonight.

well mouse breeding started as a compettion with my landlord/neighbor of who could produce the coolest mouse. he was producing really nice brindles, very high contrast (light tan and dark brown) so i challenged him, luckly for us we both have glassed in porches so we dont have to deal with the smell in the house. it turned into a fun thing to do, to match up diffrent color combos and pattern combos to see what comes out, as soon as i get my PC up and running i will post pictures of my craziest mice, the ones that i think are really cool i hold onto to set up a new colony in the future, its cleaning night tonight anyway so i will get a better idea of exactly what i have in this litter, you all have a nice night and holiday season

That's kind of a neat thing, trying for the most interesting colors. Of course for show mice that probably wouldn't be a great idea! But to not show them and just go for pretty mice... I just love the odd ones. And the orange ones. I love orange mice. And satins. They are all wonderful.
