Hi all, i'm thinking of having some mice babies once i've got my two girls tamed but the only thing bothering me is how i should go about separating them. Once the babies are old enough to leave their mums how should i separate them to ensure i don't get any more litters? I'm concerned that if i put the baby boys in with the father he will try and eat/attack them but obviously i can't leave all the boys in the girls cage or i'll have to get a mortgage to cage all the babies they'll have. I'd love a mice family but not sure how to work it out. Any ideas please?

Male mice don't typically get along very well, though brothers may if given enough space and plenty of hiding places and a few water bottles and feeding bowls scattered about their cage. The father may get along with his sons, if he is kept with them almost constantly during their rearing. He may be ok with them if he is only reintroduced to them right after the boys are all weaned. He may not like them at all though.

However, you can keep all the male babies together in one big cage as soon as they are weaned (around 4-5 weeks of age). Depending on how many boys you have in the litter, it may not be very difficult to house them all alone.

Dad may never get along with them, so he may have to live alone or be fixed, so he can go back in with Mom. (not sure how intact males will take to a fixed male....but if dad is fixed while babies are still nursing, he will have time to recover and heal from the surgery and maybe ready to have his sons move in with him.

You could also try and find homes for all the males and maybe some of the females, and keep the mom and a couple of her daughters.
