Male mouse attempting escape...

Buggzter Oct 23, 2007 04:27 PM

I have a breeding group of one male and three female (yes, for my reptiles, although I will be euthanizing them humanely before they are eaten, plus my husband will likely adopt one or two as pets...)

We have had them for one week so far, and they all seem to be doing well. food, water, cardboard tubes, other toys, treats... But my problem is the male - we didn't have a lid on the 10 gal tank for a few days, but now that there is the male keeps trying to jump out! He'll climb on ANYTHING to jump up. He's even climbed on some of the females so as to jump!

Is there anything I can do to help him feel better so he doesn't seem to want to get away from the girls? There's no fighting, they eat and drink ALOT, and seem all happy except for the male...

Thanks for any suggestions!

Personally I would just get a bigger cage. Put in a couple exercise wheels. Wheels can help burn off excess energy for mice. With 4 adults, I suggest two wheels, one on either side of the cage, this way they don't all try and get onto the wheel at once.

It's not that he is trying to escape from the girls, especially is they get along. It is much more likely that he is just bored and wants to explore. If the mice have a lot of toys but don't play with all of them, the ones they don't like should be taken out and replaced with something else. It just gives them a little bit more in the way of fun, which they need being cooped up in a cage all the time.
