When we got our puppy in June our rats were already established & they were what.. lemme think 17 months old.
Our puppy never paid any attention to the rats other than he saw them they sniffed each other's noses through the cage bars but the dog didn't really care.
Now all of a sudden he noticed the babies & he's been going nuts- barking at them, jumping up at the cage.
I think it's because the babies are so active & they're all over the place.
It's gotten to the point that if I want to sit & watch the rats without getting them into the playground I have to send the dog outside.
Our last weenie dog got a little too interested in the rats in 1998 but got his nose bitten for it.
After that he NEVER attempted to get near a rat didn't matter if it was new rats old rats he never bothered them again for the rest of his life.. it sounds mean but I'm hoping this dog will get a nose bite so he'll know to leave them alone too. :-x
Stevie Ray- the dog has taken forever but he finally does understand the word no so I don't think he'll get out of control but I am saying NO a lot lately.

They're pretty curious about him. I guess they think he's another rat! Crusher, the puppy, he weighed in yesterday at 3 1/2 lbs., and my biggest rat Pachebel is 1 1/2 lbs.! We're trying to get them all to be friends now while Crusher is young so in case another rat escapes. Our old boy Norbie once got out somehow, and our beagle protected him from our big dog. She told us where he was when we got home, but us dumb humans wouldn't listen to her. She and Norbie were very good friends. When Norbie died Fancy wouldn't eat for several days. So sad.. but she loves the rats and it's nice to know she doesn't want to hurt them. We don't trust her with them unsupervised, but still.
