Weenie dogs & rats

PHRatz Feb 26, 2007 11:54 AM

When we got our puppy in June our rats were already established & they were what.. lemme think 17 months old.
Our puppy never paid any attention to the rats other than he saw them they sniffed each other's noses through the cage bars but the dog didn't really care.
Now all of a sudden he noticed the babies & he's been going nuts- barking at them, jumping up at the cage.
I think it's because the babies are so active & they're all over the place.
It's gotten to the point that if I want to sit & watch the rats without getting them into the playground I have to send the dog outside.
Our last weenie dog got a little too interested in the rats in 1998 but got his nose bitten for it.
After that he NEVER attempted to get near a rat didn't matter if it was new rats old rats he never bothered them again for the rest of his life.. it sounds mean but I'm hoping this dog will get a nose bite so he'll know to leave them alone too. :-x
Stevie Ray- the dog has taken forever but he finally does understand the word no so I don't think he'll get out of control but I am saying NO a lot lately.

I don't get it, why do we get dogs bred to kill rats AND rats? We just got a yorkie a couple of weeks ago. He's so tiny though he's already afraid of them. They're pretty curious about him. I guess they think he's another rat! Crusher, the puppy, he weighed in yesterday at 3 1/2 lbs., and my biggest rat Pachebel is 1 1/2 lbs.! We're trying to get them all to be friends now while Crusher is young so in case another rat escapes. Our old boy Norbie once got out somehow, and our beagle protected him from our big dog. She told us where he was when we got home, but us dumb humans wouldn't listen to her. She and Norbie were very good friends. When Norbie died Fancy wouldn't eat for several days. So sad.. but she loves the rats and it's nice to know she doesn't want to hurt them. We don't trust her with them unsupervised, but still.

Yeah I've thought about that.. here we are with dogs bred to kill small critters.. what does that say about us?
LOL

Our last dachshund was a killer, he'd kill birds and baby bunnies. Once he was bitten on the nose by one rat he would never go near any of them.
This dog is more alpha male than the last one was although he's still a "weenie" literally..
I wouldn't trust this one not to kill, I just hope he doesn't start it with the baby bunnies. We seem to find baby bunnies in our yard every spring & spring is on the way!

Our weenie dogs wont go anywhere near the rats anymore. They use to stick their noses up next to the rat cages and Gunner nipped them both hard on the nose. Now they stay as far away as possible. If they see me take a rat out they take off into another room. LOL

That doesn't stop them from killing little critters outside and bringing them in and placing them in my lap. They think I am supposed to be absolutely thrilled. I haven't figured out how to tell them I don't like their little presents yet. Oscar brought a live squirrel into our house once. I had so much trouble trapping that squirrel and taking it back outside. They are fast little guys!

Oh my gosh!! ROFL!!
I'll bet it was tough getting a live squirrel out of the house!

Ours never brought in a live one but once he came in & looked odd to me. He went in the bedroom & I came in here to the computer. In a few minutes I went in the room he was in because things seemed strangely quiet in the house.
He looked at me with that guilty look & I noticed what I thought was a string hanging out of his mouth so I went over & started pulling it.
A whole BIRD came out of his mouth, that was a bird's leg not string that I saw.
Ewwwwwwwww that grossed me out because he had it on our BED! Bwahahahahhahaha
