Problem with my collony

RNSkinner Feb 26, 2007 06:30 PM

Hi everyone. I recently introduced some rats that I picked up from a different state to my rat collony. Now most of my rats are sick and a bunch have already died. Does anyone have any ideas about what I can do

Thanks, Ricky

Try a vet? and next time quarantine.

If they are actually dying, it's probably a virus like SDA. Don't introduce any new rats or breed any of them for a couple months and it will work its way out of your colony.

Any new rats and it will just keep it going and re infecting.

I have to agree that your best bet is to get them to a vet that treats rats as soon as possible. If it is something that is causing them to die you need to get your remaining rats treated before they get any worse. Medications that you get from pet stores are crappy and wont do anything to help them. Sometimes they even make them worse. I hope the rest of your colony gets better soon and make sure your ratties are sickness free before you introduce anymore.

When I used to get new rats I would Q them, in an entire different building, for 14 days and they would be on antibiotics for 14 days also. A vet is your best bet. Good luck.
