CANCER!?!?!?!

coluberking25 Feb 27, 2007 08:05 PM

I was reading responses to my posts and apparently, I believe RFlagg, said that my brand of food, Kaytee, has a cancer causing substance in it!!! Is Clubber going to suddenly die? I will try to get new food ASAP, but I think I'm probably going to have to wait until Thursday until I can do that...

Check the feed stores in your area. If they are a Purina dealer they should be able to order Mazuri rodent chow. It is lab quality rat and mouse blocks. Great stuff. Lab chow should be a rat and mouse staple diet. All other foods should be as a treat only.

No he's not going to drop dead from cancer anytime soon.
I've had only 2 rats develop cancer in 12 years.. but it wasn't diet related. They're like people some are predisposed to cancer.
Check out the PMI rat food too if you find a Mazuri dealer.. he can get the PMI as well since PMI is also Purina.

I can't help it I just like it better than Mazuri.

That's right, he's not going to develop cancer immediately after eating that preservative. It would take constant exposure, feeding that type of food for a significant amount of time for anything to develop.

I wouldn't worry about it, just try to get Harlan or Mazuri lab blocks when that bag runs out.

Purina LabDiet is good as well, my feed store sells that brand and I've used it a few times. My rats like the Harlan better and it's cheaper anyway, at the reptile show.

NO FAIR! Reptile shows are always too far away for me so I haven't been to one in 9 years. I'm jealous now LOL

My local feed store can get either one PMI or Mazuri for basically the same price but my rats always do tend to prefer the PMI. I guess that's why I'm so sold on it.. they like it better so that's what I get.
I did try Harlan once, had to mail order it. My rats turned their noses up at it so that's why I don't use it plus it's so much harder for me to get.
Really which one to use does kind of boil down to what is available to you & easiest to find.

The local show is twice a month, Sunday is the next.

I'm thinking of getting either a ball python, another corn snake, or maybe a couple tarantula spiderlings. Not sure if I want to deal with crickets though...

I'm leaning towards the Ball Python if I can find a baby captive bred cheap enough. I've already got the mice in the freezer for my corn snakes.

As for the feed, they stock Harlan 2018, $13 for 33 lbs, or Mazuri 6F $18 for 50 lbs.

Tarantulas are very easy to care for.
I got mine as adults & proven females so I've had better luck with them than people who've bought them unsexed then ended up with males.
If I want to go to a herp show I have to travel 6-8 hours so if I want to go I have to stay the night.
That's why we never go.. too much trouble doing all that and having to hire a pet sitter.

The preservative is ethoxyquin. Just read the ingredients on whatever you buy, and if it has ethoxyquin don't get it. It's a rubber preservative... that's how much these corporations care about our pets!!
