transporting a new pet

liketheriver Mar 13, 2007 05:41 PM

I am a new rat mommy with a question....

I am a college student going home for spring break and I cannot transport my rat's whole cage comfortably in my friend's car when I go home for the week (it has to stay in the trunk.) I was looking for input on what kind of set up I should look for in a smaller, easily portable travelling cage. The trip is a six hour car ride, and I was looking for something that could stay on my lap/at my feet. My girl is six months old and about the size of my hand. Is a trip this long okay for a rat? How big of a carrier should I get? Thanks in advance!

I have a cheap small generic animal cage from Pet's Mart. I use that when I travel with rats in the car.
I found that for longer trips you need to not hang the water bottle on the cage, it'll leak out. I take a full water bottle and give them drinks when we're stopped. Instead of messy bedding I use old towels for them to burrow into while they ride. Generally they get bored & just sleep so it's not really horribly rough on them.
Really any small cage will work as long as the bar spacing is small.
