That Pet food Recall really bugs me

coluberking25 Mar 22, 2007 08:08 PM

Want to know why? Because it makes me wonder why the Kaytee Pro-Diet blocks haven't been recalled....is any work even being done to try and get it off the shelves? I don't want to hear boycotting it....there are tons of dumb people in today's world(myself included) who buy it just because it is cheap...

Come to think of it Kaytee isn't the only thing out there that should be recalled....there are tons of inappropriate diets out there for rats...

Because of ethoxyquin?

When I had rats that would eat lab blocks, I used Mazuri. I was so glad when PetsMart actually started carrying a brand that didn't have a nasty preservative.

Yes! It should be recalled.

By the way I use Mazuri too.

Read the ingredients list on a bag of Nutriphase if you want your heart to stop. That's the brand Petsmart recommends. It's horrifying. A little corn is fine, but that stuff is almost all corn!! And really, what's the price difference? A couple of dollars per bag? People are so cheap!!

This recall has me on edge. Before I heard about it, my yorkie ate a few cans of the Nutro that was recalled. We've since switched him to Merrick and Nature's Variety for now. We're certainly not going to buy Nutro again, or any of the other brands made at Menu Foods.

What's scary is people who are too cheap to buy the good stuff in the first place probably won't care if their brand is recalled (except some of the higher-end stuff like the Nutro or other "good" brands). I told my parents while they had our dog Lucy (she belonged to them before we got her) that the brand of kibble they were feeding her has the highest levels of sodium pentobarbitol (the euthanasia drug) of any dog food on the market, and they refused to buy her better stuff because they said if it was bad for her she wouldn't be so healthy!! They never even took her to the vet to make sure she was!! The real issue was that the junk they were feeding her was the cheapest thing money could buy, and it doesn't matter if it's bad for her!! Sadly that is the way of some people. My parents are actually still under the impression that all pet food is required by law to be safe for human consumption in case a person eats it!! I have tried and tried to tell them that's not the truth, but they won't hear a word of it. It's really sad when people are that dense.

there are a number of "high end" pet foods on the recall list. it's not a situation where cheap versus expensive brands is part of the equation. People buying the good foods are just as likely to get bad food as are the people buying the cheaper brands. The reason so many companies are affected is because what happened was that a COMMON ingredient in pretty much all dog/cat foods was contaminated and not any of the proprietary ingredients that create the different recipes between those brands.
