CAN YOU BELIEVE IT!?! THEY'RE GONE!?!

coluberking25 Mar 25, 2007 08:12 PM

Well they're all dead now....

THE LICE THAT IS!!!

I gave Isis another bath today and while I was scrubbing her...I looked very carefully and saw no lice(just some scratch marks from when they were there I guess. So I THINK they are all gone.

I say I think because she does still scratch herself...just not as much..so I'm hoping it's just normal for them to scratch themselves like us humans do.

Isis got absolutely no affention from her previous owner(the little b-ball player did and thought of Isis as just a rat to keep the b-ball player company). I've been trying to give her affection and she seems to be tolerating it more and more each day. I think she's at least getting the hang of knowing her name. I offered her a piece of banana and called her and she came to me. She took the piece of banana and ran back into her little corner and ate the piece. After that I called her again and she came back and licked the banana leftovers off my hand.

Watch closely because shampoo cannot and will not kill the nits.
Nits are the eggs of lice, they will hatch in 2-3 weeks so you're going to be dealing with them again.

This is why I kept saying get a vet to prescribe Revolution.
It lasts a full month so when the nits hatch it's still active & will kill what hatches then they're gone for good.
Everything that's topical: shampoos, sprays, powders, mousse.. they all have to be used multiple times because they cannot kill those nits.

Well then I can eventually get rid of them completely if I catch them in their nymph stage. Gonna have to keep my eyes peeled.

I got the advice from a vet to use the shampoo. And no not like some online vet, I actually went down to the clinic, they were busy, and I gave them my number and they called me back.

For now I'm not worrying too much. She's at least temporarily relieved for now.

I'm not sure how she is with handling. She tries to run when I pick her up and still poops, but she bruxes when I scratch behind her ears and she looks around when I stop stroking her as if to say, "Hey! Who said you could stop?" She even fell asleep on my lap last night!

She's also very fun to watch. One moment she'll just be drinking from her water bottle. The next moment, she suddenly gets a burst of energy and starts running and hopping around like crazy! Also, I just put food in her dish today. The dish is on a higher ledge in the cage, so she started out hopping onto the ledge and hopping back down to stash her blocks. Then she apparently got tired of this hopping, so she tipped the dish to get some blocks out. The ones that didn't fall out she was able to easily get them by simply standing on her hind legs! I have no idea if she did it intentionally or not, but it was still funny!

The vet I worked for usually had people treat once a week for three weeks, just to make sure they were killing any new bugs as they hatched. It's really important to clean the cage and change the bedding just as often (if not more), but I'm sure you already knew that. If you have any wooden cage furniture, I'd probably just get rid of it. I really liked using PVC pipe and cardboard boxes- easily cleanable and/or replaceable.

Yeah just be sure you treat more than once & you should be able to get a handle on this.

I realized something.. my own frustration.
I'm not for using shampoo, powder, spray any of that because I've never had good luck with it. I ended up so frustrated that I just can't seem to let myself recommend those things to people because they made ME so darn MAD! LOL

If you can get it to work then that's great!

I posted this a looooong time ago lol. According to PHRatz there are still very likely to be eggs on her that will hatch. I just have to catch them in the nymph phase and that should do it.

Two kids, a husband, three dogs, nine mice, five rats, two gerbils, one hamster, meals to cook, house to clean, garden to work on... I'm late... but here. If this is all I'm slacking on, I think I'm doing pretty well!!
