Getting Isis to enjoy a shoulder perch

coluberking25 Mar 31, 2007 10:18 PM

Well there's really only one thing wrong with Isis...

....she really doesn't like sitting on my shoulder. I've put her up there before and all she did was poop(and unfortunately, at the time, I was next to my bed and it got on my bed!). Anyone know how I can get Isis to realize that a shoulder is fun? I miss getting my ears tickled by whiskers! Thanks in advance!

Just give her time.
One of my new babies is a fear pooper also. The first couple days every time I'd pick him up he'd poop. Today, he didn't poop at all when I held him, and crawled up to my shoulder himself.

Don't force her to go up there, she will eventually work her way up there.

If she's secure enough to eat outside of her cage you can try the Rice Krispie trick. Put her on your shoulder and feed them to her one after another for a little while each day. The Rice Krispies are tiny and she'll be able to eat quite a few before she gets full/loses interest. That way she'll learn that your shoulder is a nice place to be because that's where the treats are.

Try giving her treats when she's out with you so she'll associate her time with you with good things.

As for her using the bathroom on you, time will most likely cure that. Keep getting her out and handling her, and if she uses the bathroom on you, put her back in her cage. Once she realizes that being with you is fun, she'll want to be out longer... and that will mean holding it. If you have her out a while of course let her go back to her cage every so often so she can use the bathroom in an appropriate place.
