Those pet food recalls

PHRatz May 04, 2007 11:25 AM

I am having the hardest time finding something for my dog to eat.
He's on prescription diet right now because he ate that string a few weeks ago, then kept having stomach problems. Soon he'll have to go back to a regular food & I still can't decide which one to use!
Anyway....

I keep getting emails from friends with info on the recalls & actually got info on fish & turtle foods. Some of those have the wheat gluten & the rice proteins in them. So I checked everything I have around here & thankfully.. I don't have any of those brands that do have the bad ingredients but then I worried about my rat food.
PMI & Mazuri are both Purina, PMI regulates Mazuri..
we rat keepers who feed either of those are so lucky.. I looked at their websites & found that neither brand has the bad ingredients. Ahhhhhhhhh

Anyway I got to thinking, every one here should take a look at your rat food labels in case you're feeding a brand other than a Purina brand.
For the sake of your furbabies.. every one stop what you're doing & go read your labels, we can't be too careful!

You mean to say turtle food got recalled!?! What brand!?! I must know...for I have a painted turtle I feed turtle sticks to. I use the Reptomin floating sticks. I've had him since 7th grade...and I'd be really bummed to lose hime now while in college! What was the brand!?! Please tell!

No it did not get recalled BUT check the labels because some brands do have wheat gluten in them.
One of my pals wrote & told me that her friend used a fish food, all her fish died.. she read the label & it has wheat gluten in it.
Since the USDA does NOT regulate reptile or fish food which means they don't care if they live or die.. we have to remove those products from our homes ourselves!

btw I switched to Jurrasi brand aquatic turtle food over a year ago.. my turts like it much better. It has none of the bad ingredients AND on top of that my western painted suddenly became a brighter turtle.. his color fading stopped.
I feed mine more live/fresh food than pellet but when I do use pellet, I'm sticking with Jurrasi for the better ingredients & color enhancing it did.

I think I tried the Jurassipet brand before. My turtle didn't take it.

Actually in 1998 after one of my aquatics got sick with a gout type of illness, all the vets that chimed in on his problem by phone agreed that too much commercially made food is not a good thing so I don't feed them very much pellet food now at all.
I breed bugs & worms for them to eat, they eat whole fish too.
I give them the most variety that I can & so far so good, they are 13 & 11 years old this year.

I also feed turtle food, Zoo Med, to my roaches. But I just bought more last week so hopefully it is ok.

Just check the label to see if it has wheat gluten or rice protein concentrate. Then you'll know if it's safe.

I buy organic broccoli for the bird to eat, she never finishes a whole head of that. When I buy a new one I cut up the old & feed it to the roaches. They LOVE IT!!

I have so many damn baby roaches. They are still too small to put in my sav cage and there are too many for my beardies to finish off. The beardies have been getting them everyday and haven't even put a dent in the baby population. I think I am going to feed some to my rats. Rats LOVE mealworms so I am sure they will love roaches too, especially if they have to chase them

Very well put, I found that the Rat food Iw as feeding had Rice protien in it Needless to say Just to be safe it got dumpped and at the moment they are EAting Fruits and Veggies with some Cracked corn from the Feed mill. I am looking into making my own Rat food seems to be the only way to go with things now days!!

Sara I'm gonna stick with my PMI for the rats.. I've been thinking very seriously about going with PMI brand for the dog too when he gets off this prescription Hill's I/D that he's on.
I looked at PMI's website.. they have very strict guidelines, NONE of their products are on the recall list & won't be because they don't use any of the bad ingredients.
I checked with the feed store where I buy the rat food they do sell PMI for dogs too & said it sells very well all the time, & did even before this recall started.
The only problem was, they did not have any small samples. I'd really like a sample so I can try before I buy. :-x

I checked the PMI website really well & found that they don't seem to have a formula for dogs that are prone to obesity. I'm almost out of I/D & need to get him on a regular diet so yesterday I broke down & bought Science Diet adult light.
He liked it ok & so far no diarrhea with it so since they are not on the recall list.. I may stay with that for now.
Heck since it's low cal, the rats can probably have some now & then for a treat.
