Strawberries?

coluberking25 May 13, 2007 11:45 PM

Are strawberries ok for rats? I gave one to Isis, she ate it and is still alive and well...

I can be a huge worry-wort sometimes! I'm just double checking to make sure they're ok!

I think the occassional strawberry is fine.
The only problem that comes with fruit is the fact that fruits are high in natural sugar. Sugar will cause diarrhea if they eat too much. If you don't feed too much then it's ok.

Rats are a lot like we are, that's why they are such good models for research... but it also means they can eat a lot of what we eat.
I always advice people to stay away from too much grease in foods- fried foods. Also stay away from high protein foods, high fat, & high sugar.
IMO the sugar from candy, cookies, cakes etc, with the white refined sugar are worse than an occasional bite of fruit.

Definitely! On Saturday we went to a local place and picked about four pounds of strawberries. You can imagine how happy our rats were that night! I just about passed out from laughing at my son. He's 2. He would pick a strawberry, pull the leaves off, and put the whole thing in his mouth. As he was chewing it, he'd walk along the path looking for another good one. By the time we left he looked like a little vampire with all that strawberry juice on his face.

After you give rats strawberries, go on with your day, and come back later to check on them...

don't forget that they had the strawberries earlier! Or you'll have a heart attack like I did thinking there had been a slaughter in the rat cage. LoL Strawberry juice all over white CareFresh scared the crap out of me!

Hehe this was gonna be my advice too. I've done this with all kinds of food...my friend overfed my boys yogies once too and when I got home after vacation I thought they were pooping blood. Rushed them to the vet and we realized it wasn't blood but their poop matched the yogies I brought with me for rewards,ew!
