HELP!!!!My rat has worms!!

ChristinaK Jun 15, 2007 08:33 AM

I discovered yesterday the my Rat Stuart has worms. Is there something I can give him to make them go away? Keep in mind i live in an area where they dont see rats at the vets office of snakes for that matter. Any advice would be most welcomed.

What kind of worms and where are they on the rat?

Call a different vet. You have to medicate the rat based on what type of worms they are. Different worms require different meds & you need to know exactly what kind of worms they are to know what meds work.

The dose then has to be absolutely correct or you'll kill the rat too.

I just realized.. there may not be another vet you can call. I forget sometimes that like my aunt in a small town, there is only one vet.

Ask the one who's there if he/she can do a fecal for you. The worms are going to look the same as dog worms.. they'll be a different worm species but they'll be the same genus. So if it's roundworms, hooks, pins, tapes.. the worm eggs under the microscope will look extremely similar to any dog or cat worms.

If the vet could then call another vet for you or talk to other vets online- your vet can find out what medication to use & how much to use.
Really.. the vet can literally just pick up the phone & get the info needed to treat worms in a rat.
I just hope the vet would be willing to do it.. many who don't treat rats are willing to at least do that much.

any good vet should be able to send a stool sample to the lab to check what kind of worms they are. If it comes down to it you can get worm medication from the pet store or farm store that is not near as good as rx meds, but its something. Maybe the vet can tell you how much to give the rat.
