So I finished off that bag of Kay-Tee brand Soft Sorbent and although it didn't seem to bother the rats I didn't like it because it's got tiny little bits, it made a big mess on the floor under the cages. The rats didn't mind it but I minded the mess.
Yesterday I went to the store to buy more CareFresh but dang it they were out of the large sized bags. I looked around & found another new product from Kay-Tee called Total Comfort, it looks almost just like CareFresh so I bought it. The big bag of it was 6 dollars cheaper than the big bag of CareFresh.
Has anyone tried this stuff yet? If not I'll let you know if I think it's as good as CareFresh.

I have tried this. For some reason, just a day or two after putting them on it, EVERY SINGLE RAT developed mites. I have multiple cages, so I'm pretty sure that it wasn't just a coincidence and they spread it to each other. The only things the cages had in common were this bedding.
I took it back and got a refund.

I have a fellow rat lover who uses it and has never had a problem, but I won't be using it again.

I have heard of Total Comfort...some reptile person used it with bearded dragons...it apparently is made out of wood, but fluffed up. From what it sounds like it is most likely another form of wood pulp, like Care Fresh..but not made out of old newspapers or whatever care fresh is made out of (I can't remember if its just recycled newspapers turned back into a pulp then having the water drained out so it drys in odd chunks and clumps, or its the 'wash off' of excessive pulp produced during the making of newsprint at a pulp mill..

I think Total Comfort is made out of hard wood fibers so should be safe for rodents. I just think its totally useless for bearded dragons (though the guy who told me he uses it for his that its totally safe...dried paper or wood fibers still absorb liquids...I suspect it could cause impactions in reptiles...but since rats don't eat their bedding...even accidentally, I see no similar risk in rodents.)

I've used it now... and it is just a wood fiber like CareFresh but OMG it is so much softer. It feels really good to me & so far they seem to like it.
I've had it in there since Friday night & no odors so it seems to control that at least so far.
If it keeps holding down odors and working out like it has so far, I'm going to be switching to this for good.
