getting rid of musty odor

palrthanyu Dec 07, 2007 09:48 AM

Gah, so we kept the unused cages in the basement and the dehumidifier died for a bit so things got a little musty smelling. We've cleaned everything up and all but the cage I have is PVC coated and it's just retaining that smell. Anyone have a good suggestion for something to freshen it without irritating the ratties noses? I'm thinking I might try chlorhexadine but not sure that's strong enough. Maybe clean it with that then vinegar and water or lemon juice? I'm kinda stumped here....

The odor may just go away on it's own, but if you wanted to try cleaning it anyways, try vinegar and peroxide. Dont mix them together, but keep them separate and spray on one after the other. let it sit. Then just rinse. It's far safer than conventional cleaning products, and if contacted will not case any harm. It is also a great disenfecting product. You can google it if you dont believe me. ~C

Not sure where you live but if its in the warm south what about letting it sit out in the full sun for a couple of days? and use a bleach/cold water mix, of course making sure you rinse very well.

hehe thanks for the replies, actually the smell dissipated by itself over a few days. I did give the cage a good soak with bleach solution and a nice rinse when I cleaned it though, just to be sure. As for the where I live...frosty cold Massachusetts heh. Leaving a cage out in the yard wouldn't do much other than freeze it now.
