Helped out 2 days ago...

My friend and I were fishing about an hour away from home down at the beach. We noticed a hurt bird, which on closer inspection ended up being a hurt (and extremely ill tempered) tern. I bundled the poor guy up in my jacket and took him back to my car (to the amazement of some of the fisherman out on the jetty) and got a towel and put him in a bucket after getting some gloves (he nipped me a few times). After calling the shelter I volunteer with and being referred aroud, I finally talked directly to the local rehabilitator and got the bird to her. Don't know if he made it or not, but I did my part. Is anyone else here from the Houston, Tx area?

Congrats on helping the bird...I am nowhere near TX myself (sounds warmer than Wisconsin this time of year tho!) Hope the rehabber can help the little guy out, amazing what we carry around "just in case"...carriers, leads, gloves...never know what one might come across!

You should see my car. Everyone always complains about how much of a packrat I am and how my car is so jam-packed full of useless trash, but I have fishing stuff with me all the time among other "necessities." You would be surprised how well fishing stuff can help with everything in life. Fishing supplies and duck tape...that is all one needs to get by in life I say Unfortunately for the bird, it was pretty disoriented and didn't look like it would make it. But euthanasia is part of rehab and you have to accept whether you like it or not. Better to be put down quickly than left to linger on the jetties.
